You might call him Mr. Nematode. Dr. Schroeder has spent the past 10 years at UIUC as a faculty member. In addition to teaching plant pathology, he’s responsible for researching nematodes, particularly their biology. He aims to gain a better understanding of how nematodes survive difficult environmental conditions so he can identify recommendations to control parasitic nematodes. He also translates findings from the nematode-environmental interaction into insights about how other animals like humans deal with stress.

After receiving a bachelor’s degree in chemistry from Earlham College, Dr. Schroder earned his PhD in plant pathology from the University of Wisconsin. He served as a postdoctoral associate at Rutgers University before returning to the Midwest and joining the faculty at UIUC. He also serves as the graduate program coordinator for Crop Sciences, associate professor with Beckman Institute for Advanced Science and Technology, and an affiliate with Carl R. Woese Institute for Genomic Biology.

Fun Facts!
Although Dr. Schroeder grew up in New York, he could be found walking beans on his dad’s family farm in Iowa during the summer. This created his affinity for agriculture and the Midwest. His theme song is Sixteen Tons by Tennessee Ernie Ford, and he enjoys birdwatching to unwind.

Free SCN Testing for IL Soybean Farmers2024-11-05T10:14:29-06:00

Known as the billion-dollar pest, soybean cyst nematode (SCN) is reported to annually cost North American soybean producers $1.5 billion in lost yield. Even with such a large number, many farmers are unaware if or how SCN is impacting their soybean yield. This project aims to change that by providing free SCN soil sampling to understand presence, population and response to available varietal resistance.
